Medieval women were not allowed to own property or take oaths, so they never appeared in law courts.

Women could own property, but this mainly happened before they were married or after they were widowed. After William de Valence died, his widow Joan remained a wealthy woman in her own right for another ten years until her death. Normally a woman’s property was passed to her husband on marriage. Plenty of women appeared in court.
