Claiming Sanctuary

A fugitive running into a church could claim sanctuary inside to escape arrest.  Sanctuary seekers often remained inside their church for years.

The right of sanctuary was recognised in law from 600 CE onwards, and allowed a fugitive to shelter in a church without being arrested. Their protection was limited to forty days, after which they had to surrender to the civil authorities or give up all their possessions and go into exile.
