Monasteries were centres of medicine and healing, using herbal remedies. The medieval Physic Gardens grew the medicinal plants that were needed, and were carefully tended. The tradition of scientific gardens extended beyond the medieval period – Oxford University still has its old Physic Garden, founded in the 1620s.
